. . .

Hey I like your lead synth. Ignoring the fact that tetris is either the most or second most remixed song ever, the songs itself has some key issues: Synths are overly present, percussion is overly simplistic, and the bassline sounds almost like a lead(too high pitch). These give it an overall low energy feel. My suggestion would be to get a punchier kick and add some other perc instruments, then reEQ that bassline to get out its muddiness(probably 200-350hz lowered would do it) and boost its bass(40-150hz). Don't worry though a lot of people won't notice but im a mix whore. Anyways fun song, love the synths, Cheers!

Delicious stuff mate. This must have been what it sounded like when Bach was screwing around on the harpsichord haha. My only critique goes towards the transitions which seem a little abrupt at parts. I can totally tell where you picked up after the two week gap. Anyways I checked out your songs in general and you seem to be a good pick to watch for so kudos on the piano piece. 9/10, 5/5, artist favorited for further investigations. Cheers!

Awesome :d thanks man... Ha Maybe I might be the next bach... lol, yeah right, he was amazing. Thanks again :D

Wow mate, this is a pretty long track. I hope you plan this to make it into some DJ mixes because as a song on it's own my critique goes towards two things:

1 - There's no intro
2 - Overly generic

As for positives:
1 - Great mix. Everything seems nicely EQ'd and all that jazz.
2 - Harmony and Melody both sound really good.

All around ok track. Cheers!

Thanks for the comment.

This track is in Club mix format... it's so it can be easily mixed with other tracks.

thanks again for the comment :)

This is good stuff mate. From a dancers perspective its very nice. From a musicians standpoint its a bit over repetitive in the first half, and the second half seems much more consonant and melodic. Good stuff, (*shuffles')

Just finished a jumpstyle track of my own u might like it.

cheers!

ONESTEPAHEAD responds:

Thanks thats exactly what its for :D (shuffling)

I think the detuned sound doesn't work too well. Don't get me wrong I love me some dissonance here and there but it seems a bit too much.

The mix is beautiful. I expected that super high synth in the beginning to destroy my ears but you handled it nicely. Rolloff EQ's FTW.

Cheers,

Rucklo responds:

i was, obviously, going for a dissonant sound, yeah, and i was kindof planning that the bass would counter it some. perhaps i should have introduced a part with a lead-synth or just a riff-synth that wasn't all dissonant, like you say. it probably would have given a better contrast than the bass alone...

oh well, i really don't have time to find out what it would sound like othervice, i've already spent too much time on this tune (and now it's mastered and done, so whatever).

but thanks for an honest and helpful review, man!

That is some great quality mix you got there mate! My only word of advice would be to go for more chord progression variation. Cheers!

LaughterK responds:

Thanks and I'll take that into consideration :) this is just a demo anyways.

It's usually very difficult to find NG users with a clean mix. This tune however has got a deliciously clean mix. Very good stuff here. The bell like synth brought in around 1:50 sounds a little bit cliche but ignoring that lets take a look at the songs broken down a bit more:

Percussion - sticks with the standard trance Kick Hat Snare/kick. Lacks a bit of diversity and dynamics but because of the mix quality still turns out great.

Melody - Consonant and memorable. The melody works throughout. Like the percussion though it lacks a little bit of diversity. You can always change up a melody even as simply as moving around chord progressions of the same chords or phrases within a melody. I Loved the way the sidechained melody sounded near the beginning.

Mix - 10/10
Melody - 7/10
Percussion - 8/10
Overall 9/10

Good job mate I would love to hear more tunes like this on NG! Cheers!

I rate your review 10/10
Thank you very much, sexy pants!

Areas that need improvement: Mixing and melody consonance.

Areas that were ok: Structure related things and theme.

Areas that were good: Samples and dynamics in structure.

My suggestion if your not educated in music theory is to just come up with a little scale and only use notes on that scale. Also read some EQ tutorials and if you would like I have a whole slew of book suggestions so PM me for that. Otherwise improvement is only mostly going to come from experience. Cheers!

DJ-Galax responds:

Why thank you~

As you said, improvement comes from experience. :D
I'm always experimenting with FL trying to find new things etc...

Thanks~ ^-^

Gen Y is way worse then the Baby Boomers I guarantee it, and it's amazing that you think homosexuals are a race. hahaha. Anyways, your song needs some serious EQ work but you did get some good old school feeling in there so congrats.

dj5p00n responds:

well... that generation was racist as fuck, and if your talking about the end part, its sposed to sound like that. but yeah eq-ing needs to be done, but im lazy, and waiting for real equipment, cuz this is all computers and stuff. the sample was a shitty mp3 to begin with. whatever.

You know I see a lot of ambient IDM qualities in this song.

As for your mastering:
The mix is very good. Every instrument is very much present and out front. Effects on instruments are of course to your liking but I would have liked to see a little more reverb on that plucked string and the intro voice sounding synths that carry through the whole song.

Other aspects of the song:

Density - It seems a bit thin. Although this could be a desired level of density. I believe maybe more layers or a higher chaotic beat(as often in IDM occurs).

Melody/Percussion/Rhythm - The main lines all seems to carry a good harmonic and unified emotion behind them, as well as tie together with the sliced up amen break really well. I believe maybe a bit more dynamics are needed in the percussion for that truly professional level sound. If you don't know of him my suggestion would be to check out Nubbin. He is on this website as well (http://nubbinownz.newgrounds.com/)(r emove spaces in URL). He is a perfect example of having really dynamic percussion of this style, and also very high quality music.

All other/Overall:
The structure of the song works entirely and I love it. Your heart is truly in the right place with this one. If you would like an in depth analysis of any songs or just a general opinion/help you can PM me or email me (LogicalDefiance@gmail.com). I am also currently looking for someone who uses FL Studio to do a bit of a collaboration work for a big online game so feel free to ask. Stay cool and as always, Cheers!

pichuscute0 responds:

Wow, almost missed this, I'm glad I wanted tpo listen to this song again. XD

Anyway, thanks for this review it's extremely helpful.

I had actually just been thinking that I wished I had put more effects in (I was trying to cut back since I usually go overboard with them) so I definitely agree. I did delete the flp though, unfortunately.

Density- I did actually mean for it to be pretty thin, but I wish I had been able to make the bass a little deeper and larger (more like a deep pad). It was hard to work with.

Melody/Percussion/Rhythm- I'm happy I was finally able to get the mel;ody/harmony right. Since I'm completely self-taught and have no backgrounf in music whatsoever, it is pretty hard to just go by ear. I'm glad I was finally able to. I'm still working with experimenting with the drums. I'm getting rather lazy, to be honest. I will keep this in mind for my next song, as I think it's still missing something. This may be it. As for Nubbin, I actually was inspired by him while making this. I'm a huge fan of his and wanted to do something more his style, without getting too close. (I wanted it to be borderline/barely IDM)

Overall- I will definitely remember this for the future and I may hit you up for that collab. I'll see how much spare time I have once school starts in a few days.

Once again, thanks. Reviews like these are why I post music and every time I get another it makes me want to work even harder for the next song. :)
